Summary

Summary

Gateway regeneration corner site to Deptford High Street Conservation Area, mixed use development of 44 homes and commercial floor space.

Concept

As a key corner site once occupied by the grandiose New Cross Empire Theatre, the site demarcates the beginning of the Deptford High Street Conservation Area, an area characterised by an urban grain of narrow fronted, jostling, piecemeal Victorian urbanism typical of London’s historic thoroughfares.

The concept has been one to re-instate the site as a subtle threshold, repairing the void in the streetscape while responding to the distinct urban grain through careful articulation and rhythm within the façade.

Through the use of deep set reveals, large openings, deep piers, recessed panels and loggias the building responds to traditional ideas of load bearing masonry and verticality to synthesise ideas of permanence and durability within the façade while contemporary details such as large openings and generous amenity animate and enliven the façade to create a contemporary building.
